Zabihullah Mujahid Decries UN Security Council’s Afghanistan Meeting as “Pointless”

RASC News Agency: Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban, has dismissed the United Nations Security Council’s upcoming meeting on Afghanistan as “pointless” due to the absence of a representative from the Taliban. Mujahid further asserted that any decision or resolution made by the Security Council in the group’s absence is inherently biased and unacceptable to the Taliban. The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene on Thursday, December 13, to discuss Afghanistan’s ongoing situation.

On the same day, Mujahid reiterated the Taliban’s long-standing demand for the transfer of Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations to their group. Speaking with national television, he stated, “It is time for the UN to grant the seat to the Taliban.” He further emphasized that once Afghanistan’s seat is officially recognized as belonging to the Taliban, the resolutions and decisions of the Security Council would be considered valid and acceptable. Since their takeover of Afghanistan, the Taliban has repeatedly sought recognition as the legitimate government of the country by the UN. However, the United Nations continues to regard the Taliban as a terrorist organization and not as legitimate representatives of Afghanistan. Furthermore, the group remains on the blacklist of several UN member states.

Rosa Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, is expected to address the current situation in Afghanistan during the meeting. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirmed on Wednesday, December 12, that the meeting will take place at 7:30 PM Afghanistan time. The discussions will focus on the situation of women and citizens in Afghanistan, as well as the broader human rights situation in the country.

At present, Afghanistan’s UN seat remains occupied by Nasir Ahmad Faiz, a diplomat from the previous Afghanistan government.
