RASC News Agency: According to media reports, at least 90 national and international organizations have issued an open letter calling on the members of the United Nations Human Rights Council to seriously consider the recognition of gender apartheid in Afghanistan. These organizations also emphasized the need to extend and strengthen the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan. The human rights and civil society organizations urged holding those responsible for human rights violations in Afghanistan accountable.
The letter stated: “We urge the continuation of a dedicated space for advanced interactive dialogue on the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan, with meaningful follow-up on the Special Rapporteur’s report regarding the Taliban’s oppression of women and girls. We also call on you to take seriously the calls for the recognition and legalization of gender apartheid as a crime under international law.”
The organizations highlighted that over the past three years, the Taliban have completely reversed the progress made toward the promotion and protection of human rights in Afghanistan. According to them, the Taliban, as the ruling authority, have disregarded Afghanistan’s international obligations and imposed widespread and unlawful restrictions on human rights.
The letter further stated: “With the ban on secondary and higher education, employment, freedom of movement, the dehumanization of women’s faces and voices in public spaces, and other fundamental rights and freedoms, as well as access to essential services, women and girls are being systematically erased from society.” Ironically, the global community is not only witnessing the gender and ethnic apartheid in Afghanistan but also sending millions of dollars monthly to Kabul, effectively strengthening this terrorist group.
