RASC News Agency: In a bold and unequivocal statement, the Australian Greens have joined a growing global outcry calling for the formal recognition and condemnation of what international human rights organisations and the Hazara diaspora describe as the unfolding genocide of Hazaras in Afghanistan. The party’s declaration aligns with longstanding appeals from Hazara civil society groups and global human rights defenders, urging the international community to break its silence on the systematic persecution of this vulnerable ethnic and religious minority particularly under the repressive rule of the Taliban.
The Greens’ statement condemns the Taliban’s resurgence as a catalyst for intensified violence, institutionalised discrimination, and widespread atrocities targeting the Hazara population. Since the militant group seized power in 2021, the situation has markedly deteriorated. Hazara civilians have been subjected to mass killings, forced displacement, and gross violations of fundamental human rights. Particularly harrowing is the plight of Hazara women, who face relentless repression and have been stripped of access to education, employment, healthcare, and basic civil liberties.
Warning of the grave consequences of international inaction, the Australian Greens called on the federal government to adopt a robust humanitarian response. The party urged Canberra to expand its humanitarian visa program to 50,000 places, providing safe haven to those escaping targeted ethnic and sectarian violence. The statement emphasised that Australia bears a moral responsibility to protect Afghanistani refugees many of whom fled Taliban persecution with the hope of rebuilding their lives in safety. Highlighting the historical context, the Greens underscored that the Hazara people have endured generations of marginalisation and state-sponsored oppression at the hands of various Afghanistani regimes. However, under the Taliban’s extremist rule, the campaign of terror has escalated to a scale that meets the threshold of genocide. The party warned that continued global apathy would embolden the perpetrators and pave the way for even graver atrocities.
As the third most influential political party in Australia following the Liberal and Liberal Democratic parties the Greens are leveraging their political capital to amplify the Hazara crisis on the international stage. Their aim is twofold: to press the Australian government into implementing concrete measures for refugee protection, and to galvanise broader international accountability mechanisms targeting Taliban crimes against humanity. Reaffirming their unwavering commitment to universal human rights and the defence of persecuted communities, the Australian Greens called for an end to diplomatic complacency. They urged immediate, principled action to safeguard vulnerable minorities and to confront the Taliban regime’s brutal campaign of ethnic and gender-based repression in Afghanistan.
At a time when humanitarian crises persist across the globe, the Australian Greens’ stance serves as a call to conscience for world leaders. Whether the international community responds with courage or succumbs to silence will determine not only the fate of the Hazara people, but also the moral integrity of the global order in the face of atrocity.
