RASC News Agency: Based on the conducted research, it is advised to avoid consuming potatoes that emit a bitter smell, as some potatoes naturally contain a poisonous substance called solanine. While experts suggest that small amounts of solanine may not cause significant harm, improper storage of the toxin in the body can lead to adverse effects. Fortunately, there are two common indicators of potato poisoning. Firstly, if a potato has a bitter odor or exhibits green streaks on its skin, it may indicate the presence of solanine poison. While the green layer itself is harmless and simply signifies the presence of chlorophyll, it can also suggest the existence of solanine. Rotten or spoiled potatoes release solanine gas, which can result in illness if consumed.
Excessive consumption of solanine can have detrimental effects on one’s health. Ingesting potatoes that contain high levels of this poisonous substance can potentially lead to coma or even death within 24 hours. Numerous studies have shown that individuals who have consumed such potatoes experience symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and, in severe cases, depression and central nervous system problems. To prevent the production of toxins and the unpleasant smell of potatoes, it is recommended to store them in a dark and cool place, away from prolonged exposure to light. Additionally, it is important to avoid long-term storage of potatoes, as their quality deteriorates over time, and they may become unfit for consumption.
According to research, the production of toxins and the unpleasant odor in potatoes can be attributed to issues with potato storage. It has been found that prolonged exposure to light, whether it be fluorescent or natural light, exacerbates these problems. To mitigate this, it is advisable to store potatoes in a bag within a cabinet, ensuring they are shielded from excessive light, and place them in a cool and dark location. While cooking potatoes may eliminate some toxins, it is not an effective method for preventing diseases associated with potato consumption.
Furthermore, it is important to note that storing potatoes for an extended period of time can have detrimental effects. While keeping them in a dark environment is the correct approach, prolonged storage poses various risks to their quality. They deteriorate, making them unfit for consumption and susceptible to spoilage. In such instances, it is imperative to dispose of them without hesitation.
