RASC News Agency: EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jota Orpilin, made a momentous announcement on October 14, utilizing social media as a platform to convey the European Union’s commitment of 30 million euros towards healthcare in Afghanistan. This substantial aid package aims to address the pressing healthcare needs of Afghanistani citizens, with a particular focus on essential health services. The decision was reached during the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, where the European Union and the World Bank jointly oversee the Afghanistan Coordination Group.
Before the recent earthquake rocked Herat province, the European Union had already pledged a significant sum of three and a half million euros to provide assistance to the affected victims. The earthquake, which struck last Saturday, registered a magnitude of 6.3 and inflicted catastrophic devastation across various parts of Herat province. Tragically, this natural disaster claimed the lives of thousands, left thousands more injured, and resulted in numerous individuals being reported missing. The financial losses suffered by the province’s residents are substantial.
Moreover, reports indicate that women and children constitute the majority of the victims, underscoring the dire need for immediate humanitarian aid in the region. It is crucial to acknowledge that Afghanistan, due to factors such as insufficient attention from the government towards the health sector, inadequate infrastructure development, and the country’s challenging mountainous terrain, continues to grapple with providing consistent access to healthcare services in remote areas.
Furthermore, since the Taliban assumed control of the country, the health sector, along with various other sectors, has suffered significant setbacks. This further compounds the pre-existing challenges faced by the Afghanistani population in obtaining essential healthcare services.
