RASC News Agency: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) expressed concern over the restrictions and suppression of the media in Afghanistan under the control of the Taliban group.
This committee has expressed these concerns regarding the repression of media and journalists by the Taliban group in Afghanistan in a declaration this morning, Monday, August 14.
The Committee to Protect Journalists made these statements on the eve of the two-year rule of the Taliban group and said that the imposition of more restrictions and the worsening of media repression will isolate Afghanistan compared to other parts of the world.
In its announcement, this committee quoted to Lia Lee, the coordinator of the Asian program of the Committee to Protect Journalists, as saying: “At a time when Afghanistan is facing one of the biggest humanitarian emergencies, access to credible and reliable information can save lives and livelihoods in crisis will help. However, the increasing repression of the Taliban group on the media is doing the opposite.
He added that in addition to the fact that the Taliban initially promised to allow the press to operate freely, they did the opposite and banned the operation of several media since they took over.
He said that the Taliban group has prevented the activities of some international media in Afghanistan and refused to give visas to foreign journalists.
In a part of the declaration, it is also mentioned: “Over the past two years, hundreds of Afghanistani journalists have fled to neighboring countries such as Pakistan and Iran, and many of them are now stuck in legal limbo without a clear prospect of resettlement in a third country.” As of 2021, Afghanistani people have become one of the largest contributors of exiled journalists receiving CPJ’s emergency support each year.”
It should be mentioned that before this Reporters without Borders (RSF) organization, in a new report regarding the situation of Afghanistani journalists and media after the Taliban regained control of the country, said that in the last two years, Afghanistani media have faced destruction.
According to this report, 12,000 journalists have lost their jobs after the Taliban regained control.
According to the report of this institution, during this period, the Taliban group imposed extensive restrictions on the media and journalists, banned a number of media outlets, detained, and tortured some journalists.
At the same time, a significant number of journalists have been forced to leave Afghanistan in the last two years due to the narrowing of the journalistic work environment.
