RASC News Agency: The Supreme Council of National Resistance for the Salvation of Afghanistan, in a statement, emphasized that Ahmad Shah Masoud’s enduring legacy lies in his steadfast resistance against extremism and terrorism. At the same time, Salahuddin Rabbani, leader of the Jamiat-e-Islami Party of Afghanistan, commemorated the 23rd anniversary of Masoud’s martyrdom, stating that “today, more than ever, we must draw inspiration from the thoughts and actions of our National Hero.”
Rabbani emphasized that all Afghanistanis need to embody Masoud’s vision, standing courageously in the face of adversity, just as he did. Several other political figures have also shared messages on the anniversary of Ahmad Shah Masoud’s assassination. The Supreme Council of National Resistance further noted, “Masoud’s defiance against extremism and terrorism was a defining element of his struggle.” Ahmad Shah Masoud was assassinated 23 years ago, on September 9, 2001, by two Arab suicide bombers disguised as journalists in the Khwaja Bahauddin district of Takhar province. He was a distinguished commander during the Afghanistan Jihad against the Soviet Union and a prominent leader of the resistance against the first Taliban regime.
The former Afghanistan government honored Masoud with the title of “National Hero” and declared the anniversary of his assassination a public holiday. While annual public ceremonies were held to commemorate Masoud during the previous government’s tenure, under three years of Taliban rule, supporters of Masoud and political figures have been limited to issuing statements marking the day. In his message, Salahuddin Rabbani described Masoud as “far more than a military commander; he was a symbol of valor, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the highest Islamic and humanitarian values.”
Rabbani further highlighted that Masoud fought with deep faith in Islamic values and a firm belief in social justice, seeking to pave the way for a free, independent, and just Afghanistan for future generations. Masoud’s legacy as a military leader in the resistance against both Soviet forces and the Taliban is still revered by many Afghanistanis, serving as a guiding light for those striving for peace, stability, and progress in the country.
