RASC News Agency: The Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture has suspended the broadcasts of Radio Begum, citing repeated violations of broadcasting regulations. According to the ministry’s statement, the station not only breached media regulations but also transmitted content for foreign-based television networks. The Taliban asserted that Radio Begum had repeatedly engaged in such violations, ultimately leading to the suspension of its operations. The ministry further claimed that the station had “misused its broadcasting license”, prompting authorities to halt its activities pending a comprehensive review of its documentation and operations.
Although the Taliban justified their decision on regulatory grounds, Radio Begum was primarily known for its educational programming for girls, offering lessons to students who lacked access to formal schooling. A listener expressed concern over the shutdown, explaining that his young daughters had relied on the station for their primary school education. He stated, “Radio Begum had a structured schedule for broadcasting school lessons for different grade levels. It was a vital educational resource, particularly for girls deprived of schooling.” The Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture warned that if further violations are uncovered, additional legal measures could be taken against the station.
Founded on March 8, 2021, Radio Begum was launched in Kabul as a women-focused media initiative, aiming to provide educational and awareness programs for Afghanistani women. Established by Afghanistani journalist Waheeda Aman, the station received partial funding from the Begum Organization for Afghanistani Women. As of now, Radio Begum’s management has not issued any official response regarding its suspension.
