Former NATO Secretary General: A Small Number of International Forces was Enough for Security in Afghanistan

RASC: Former NATO Secretary-General Anders Rasmussen told the Democracy Summit in Copenhagen on Monday that he deeply regretted the “chaotic” withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan.

He said that a small number of international forces must remained in Afghanistan to ensure the security of Afghanistan.

He added that the current situation in Afghanistan is catastrophic.

He defended the decision of the United States and other NATO member countries with completely withdraw from Afghanistan and considered it correct.

However, the former Secretary General criticized the withdrawal strategy and described it as chaotic.

“We could have stayed in Afghanistan with a small international force that was sufficient to stabilize the country,” Rasmussen said.

Rasmussen was the leader of this organization at an important stage of the NATO mission in Afghanistan. He was elected as the head of this important military organization in 2008 when the American government led by Barack Obama decided to suppress the Taliban group by increasing 33,000 troops.

The end of Anders Rasmussen’s mission in 2014 coincided with the withdrawal of most of the international forces from Afghanistan.

Seven years after the transfer of security responsibility to the Afghan forces, the Afghan government fell and the Taliban returned to power.
