Prince Karim Aga Khan, the 49th Imam of the Nizari Ismailis, was one of the most distinguished spiritual leaders and philanthropists of the modern era. Born on January 13, 1936, in Geneva, Switzerland, he assumed leadership of the Ismaili community in 1957 at the age of 20, following the passing of his grandfather, Aga Khan III. His contributions to humanitarian causes were extensive. According to some close associates of Ahmad Shah Massoud, Aga Khan personally facilitated Massoud’s travels to Europe by providing an aircraft for his diplomatic missions.
Beyond his religious leadership, Aga Khan was a global humanitarian, a visionary investor, and a staunch advocate for sustainable development. He established the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), an organization dedicated to fostering advancements in education, healthcare, cultural preservation, environmental protection, and economic development across various regions, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and parts of Africa. The revered Ismaili leader passed away on February 4, 2025, at the age of 88 in Lisbon, Portugal. In accordance with his will and religious tradition, his eldest son was formally appointed as his successor in a ceremony attended by his family and devoted followers.
