RASC News Agency: Local sources in Faryab province report that the Taliban have indefinitely halted the payment of salaries to professors and staff members of Faryab University. According to a university source, this decision was communicated verbally last week by Taliban officials via administrative WhatsApp groups. The source noted that, according to the schedule, salary disbursements were to begin on the 25th of each month. However, more than ten days have passed without any action. The Taliban have yet to issue an official statement on the matter, and the reasons behind this abrupt decision remain unclear.
Shortly after his inauguration, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order suspending foreign aid. This decision led to a three-month suspension of U.S. assistance to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Over the past three years, the United States had provided more than $40 million per week in aid to Afghanistan under Taliban rule. The cessation of U.S. aid has caused a sharp decline in the value of Afghanistan’s currency. In an attempt to stabilize the market, the Taliban have banned all dollar transactions and subjected several money exchangers to harassment and intimidation. Reports further reveal that, beyond withholding the salaries of Faryab University employees, the Taliban have delayed or reduced payments in numerous civilian and military departments under their administration. Many employees in various sectors have been left unpaid, while others have experienced significant salary cuts.
Before the United States handed Afghanistan over to the Taliban, it was considered one of the group’s most significant financial and political backers on the global stage. Despite this, the Taliban have persistently propagated the narrative that they defeated the United States, presenting themselves as triumphant over a global superpower to manipulate public perception.
