U.S. Congressman Calls for Immediate Cessation of Financial Aid to the Taliban

RASC News Agency: Tim Burchett, a Congressman from Tennessee, has formally urged President-elect Donald Trump to halt all financial assistance to the Taliban, expressing alarm over the misappropriation of U.S. taxpayer funds. In a letter issued Monday, January 6, Burchett highlighted the gravity of the matter and requested Trump’s direct intervention to address the ongoing issue. Burchett declared his full commitment to working alongside the Trump administration to terminate any flow of U.S. funds to terrorist organizations, particularly the Taliban. He remarked, “Providing $40 million weekly to the Taliban is a blatant insult to those who served America in Afghanistan.”

The Congressman also disclosed that he had introduced a bill in 2023 to suspend all financial aid to the Taliban. While the legislation successfully passed the House, it was ultimately blocked from a Senate vote by then-Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Undeterred, Burchett vowed to reintroduce the bill in the upcoming legislative session. This call for action follows claims by a former CIA official, who alleged that in addition to the $40 million sent weekly, the U.S. provides another $10 million to fund the Taliban’s political office in Qatar.

The U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) has also released a report revealing that Washington has funneled $3.33 billion to Afghanistan under Taliban rule over the past three years. These revelations have provoked widespread condemnation, with international analysts and observers accusing the U.S. of tacitly supporting the Taliban. Critics have increasingly referred to the group as a covert intelligence project designed to further American strategic interests in Afghanistan and the broader region.
