RASC News Agency: Andrei Rudenko, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, has confirmed that the process to remove the Taliban from Russia’s list of terrorist organizations “will not happen swiftly.” He explained that any removal of the Taliban from this designation would require legislative amendments within Russia. In an interview with “RIA Novosti”, Russia’s state news agency, Rudenko stated, “The process is not immediate, as it demands changes in Russia’s legal framework.”
He further mentioned that, like several other nations, Russia is open to expanding its cooperation with the Taliban. However, he emphasized that such cooperation is contingent upon the Taliban’s removal from the terrorist list. In the interview, released on Thursday, September 26, Rudenko acknowledged that the Taliban’s control over Afghanistan represents an undeniable reality that must be addressed. Zamir Kabulov, Russia’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, earlier disclosed in May 2024 that the proposal to remove the Taliban from Russia’s list of terrorist organizations had been presented to President Vladimir Putin for final deliberation. Kabulov mentioned that certain issues regarding the Taliban still needed resolution before a definitive decision could be made.
President Vladimir Putin, during his visit to Tashkent on May 28, 2024, also addressed Russia’s relations with the Taliban. He indicated that while the exact nature of Russia’s engagement with the group remains a question, interaction with them is unavoidable. Putin highlighted ongoing consultations with regional partners, particularly in Central Asia, stating, “We are taking into account the opinions of all our partners and friends, and our approach will be aligned accordingly.”
