Activists Demand Increased Sanctions on the Taliban

RASC News Agency: Sosan Tabasom and Zubaida Akbar, two prominent women’s rights activists in the U.S., have called for heightened sanctions on the Taliban by the United Nations. In a report published on South Asian Voices, they urge the UN Security Council to enforce strict travel bans on Taliban officials. Tabasom and Akbar emphasize that women’s rights are a significant crisis in Afghanistan and warn that deteriorating conditions will worsen the situation. They call on the international community to involve Afghanistani women in discussions about the country and provide financial and political support.

The activists stress the importance of meaningful women’s participation in multi-lateral negotiations for sustainable peace and stability. Excluding women from future Doha sessions, they argue, undermines the process’s credibility and encourages further rights violations by the Taliban.

Fema, headquartered in Washington D.C., advocates for women’s rights and fights against gender discrimination. Zubaida Akbar, invited to the third Doha meeting, deemed the session “illegitimate” due to the marginalization of women and called for its boycott. She stated that any meeting sidelining women is “invalid.”
