RASC News Agency: Richard Bennett, the Special Rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Council for Afghanistan, emphasized that the plight of Afghanistani women under Taliban governance should be the primary focus at the Doha meeting. He conveyed these sentiments on Sunday, Feb 18, via a post on the social media platform X and noted his decision to abstain from attending the second Doha meeting, which commenced that day.

Bennett underscored his hope that this gathering would foster substantive and inclusive dialogues among key stakeholders who consistently prioritize discussions on human rights, particularly women’s rights, as central to Afghanistan’s future. Meanwhile, the second assembly of country representatives to discuss Afghanistani affairs is being convened by the UN Secretary-General in Doha, Qatar, today on the 18th and tomorrow on the 19th of February.

It is pertinent to highlight that the issue of human rights in Afghanistan under Taliban rule ranks among the concerns voiced by numerous human rights organizations and global authorities. Previously, foreign ministers from 12 countries collectively identified the Taliban as accountable for the most severe and distressing human rights conditions globally in a joint statement, yet the Taliban have persistently refuted these allegations.
