RASC News Agency: Rina Amiri, the United States’ Special Representative for Women’s Affairs in Afghanistan, emphasized in her latest remarks on Friday, Feb 16, the importance of supporting women’s rights and human rights in the country. Amiri conveyed this message during a meeting with Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the same day.

Ms. Amiri has characterized the Taliban’s extremist policies against Afghanistani women as a severe threat to women’s rights in the region. These remarks coincide with the recent release of a report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), which indicates that 70 percent of women in Afghanistan fear harassment and abuse by the Taliban. According to the report, 67 percent of Afghanistani women believe that the Taliban’s recognition exacerbates the crisis of women’s rights in the country and escalates the risk of strengthening and broadening the existing restrictions imposed by this Taliban group.

Furthermore, United Nations experts and various international bodies have condemned the Taliban’s treatment of women as “crimes against humanity” and have suggested that it could be categorized as “gender apartheid.” It is noteworthy that during their over two-year rule, the Taliban brutally suppressed women and girls, depriving them of their most fundamental rights.
