RASC News Agency: Zamir Kabulov, Russia’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, recently made a significant announcement regarding an upcoming United Nations-sponsored meeting focusing on Afghanistan, which is presently under the control of the Taliban group. This high-profile gathering is anticipated to occur in the latter half of January. Mr. Kabulov conveyed these noteworthy statements during an insightful discussion on Thursday, January 4, with the TASS news agency. He highlighted that representatives from diverse countries are expected to deliberate on the complex situation in Afghanistan during this session.
In the realm of Afghanistan affairs, the Russian representative expressed, “At present, we are eagerly awaiting a specified date for the UN’s invitation, and the global community will engage in meaningful discussions during the meeting.” Moreover, TASS, citing Kabulov, reported that Moscow’s ongoing initiatives concerning Afghanistan will extend into 2024. According to Mr. Kabulov, the Moscow Format meeting on Afghanistan is intricately scheduled for the fall of 2024. The Moscow Format, established in 2017, functions on the basis of a six-party consultative mechanism involving representatives from Russia, Afghanistan, India, Iran, China, and Pakistan. This mechanism is designed to “promote national reconciliation in Afghanistan and establish lasting peace in the country.”
It is crucial to highlight that earlier this year, in the month of April, the United Nations orchestrated a gathering featuring representatives from various nations to discuss the Afghanistan situation. This meeting took place in Doha, Qatar. Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, asserted during that session that the UN would host another pivotal meeting focused on Afghanistan in the future. Notably, post the Taliban’s assumption of power, numerous international and regional entities have convened meetings addressing the Afghanistan situation, significantly influenced by the dynamics introduced by this group.
