Detention of 1,500 Afghanistani Migrants in Sistan and Baluchistan, Iran

RASC News Agency: Iranian media, quoting the Deputy Commander of Sistan and Baluchistan’s police forces, reported on Sunday that authorities in the province have detained 1,494 Afghanistani migrants over the past week. Ali Reza Daliri stated that these individuals had entered Iran “illegally” without proper documentation and were subsequently identified and detained by local officials.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) also reported on Sunday that, between September 1 and 7, 50,639 people fled Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, heading toward Iran and Pakistan, while over 71,000 individuals returned to Afghanistan from these two countries during the same period. The IOM report further indicated that 57% of those returning from Iran were forcibly deported, 37% returned voluntarily, and the remaining 23% left due to economic challenges.

The increasing deportation of Afghanistani migrants from Iran comes at a time when the Iranian Parliament is deliberating on a new plan to regulate Afghanistani migration within the country. This plan is expected to result in the expulsion of thousands of “illegal” migrants. In relation to this, Ahmad Reza Radan, the Commander-in-Chief of Iran’s Law Enforcement Forces, previously announced that close to two million undocumented foreign nationals are expected to be expelled from Iran by the end of the year.
