RASC News Agency: The Hill has reported that the disastrous U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan remains a significant issue for certain voters in key swing states such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. According to this publication, the manner in which the U.S. exited Afghanistan has negatively impacted support for President Biden.
In an article published by Joseph Azam on Monday on The Hill’s website, it is stated that the withdrawal from Afghanistan and the fate of its people under Taliban rule hold importance for a substantial population of American veterans and Afghanistani-American voters in critical states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Virginia, Wisconsin, and North Carolina.
The writer accused Biden of having a “deep personal aversion to the Afghanistan war” and of executing Trump’s “weak deal with the Taliban without ensuring the survival of the fledgling democracy and the safety of the Afghanistani people.” The author asserted that Biden made a grave error and emphasized that this mistake should not be perpetuated. The article contends that both Trump and Biden orchestrated and executed the catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan. By breaking their promises to defend the Afghanistan government and people, Washington inflicted “moral injury on hundreds of thousands of American veterans.” According to the writer, they “abandoned nearly 40 million people to the rule of one of the world’s most regressive and dangerous regimes.”
The author urged Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party’s nominee for the presidential election, to distance herself from Biden’s approach to Afghanistan and adhere to America’s commitments to the Afghanistani people. One of these commitments involves aiding former Afghanistani collaborators of U.S. forces who remain in Afghanistan and expect the U.S. to relocate them to safety. Furthermore, the author suggested that Washington should facilitate permanent residency for Afghanistani evacuees in the U.S., a plan that has stalled due to Republican opposition in Congress.
The writer also urged Kamala Harris to adopt a principled stance towards the Taliban and, considering the gender apartheid in Afghanistan, to refrain from normalizing relations with the Taliban.
