Lavrov: Threats from Afghanistan Persist

RASC News Agency: Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, recently stated that threats originating from Afghanistan continue due to the presence of terrorist groups such as ISIS and al-Qaeda in the country. According to a report by TASS News Agency published on Friday, June 21, Lavrov made these remarks during a press conference.

He noted that member countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) have agreed to maintain ongoing dialogues with the Taliban for this reason. Recently, al-Qaeda leader Saif al-Adl urged his followers to come to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan for military training. The United Nations Sanctions Monitoring Team reported that since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, al-Qaeda has established safe havens in the country.

Previously, Asif Durrani expressed hope that the Taliban’s control would bring peace not only to Afghanistan but also to the broader region. However, he lamented that more than 10 terrorist groups still find refuge in Afghanistan. Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan stated that the decision regarding the formation of an inclusive government should be made by the Afghanistani people themselves.

Meanwhile, the Taliban have consistently dismissed and denied the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan under their rule.
