RASC News Agency: A collective of Afghanistan journalists in exile, residing in Europe and America, have formally denounced Taliban intelligence as the foremost obstacle to press freedom in Afghanistan, in an open letter addressed to the United Nations.

On Sunday, March 17th, coinciding with “National Journalists Day,” they articulated their appeal to the United Nations in this missive, urging sanctions against the authorities of the Taliban group and its affiliated entities for their infringement upon freedom of expression in Afghanistan. In the aforementioned letter, Afghanistan journalists in exile declared: “The Taliban group has desiccated the foundation of freedom of expression and media.”

Additionally, Afghanistan journalists in exile and advocates for freedom reinforced their call for Richard Bennett, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, to compile a comprehensive report on the status of media and freedom of expression. They specified that this report should illuminate the role of Taliban intelligence in quashing freedom of expression and media under the hegemony of this group in Afghanistan.

Moreover, these journalists underscored their insistence on the liberation of journalists detained by the Taliban group. This occurs as the Taliban group, subsequent to seizing control of the nation, has egregiously violated freedom of expression by severely repressing media and journalists through a plethora of edicts.
