RASC News Agency: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has urged Pakistan to cease the forced deportation of Afghanistani refugees during the winter season. On November 22nd, Babur Baloch, the organization’s spokesperson, announced that the cold weather in Afghanistan can prove deadly and endanger the lives of these asylum seekers. He emphasized that the return of these migrants must be voluntary, and Pakistan should identify those who face threats and require international support if they return to Afghanistan.
The UN official further highlighted that women, children, and men deported from Pakistan face several challenges in Afghanistan, particularly under the control of the Taliban group. He urged Pakistan to consider the plight of these vulnerable groups and provide them with the necessary support and protection. It is worth noting that Pakistan has already deported over 400,000 Afghanistani refugees and is currently deporting approximately 17,000 refugees per day.
Despite the significant number of Afghanistani refugees living in Pakistan, many of whom lack residency documents, Islamabad has remained determined to deport them.
However, the UN’s call to end forced deportations during the winter season underscores the urgent need to prioritize the safety and well-being of these asylum seekers. Since the situation in Afghanistan remains unstable, it is crucial for Pakistan to collaborate with the international community to find a sustainable solution that ensures the protection of asylum seekers and respects their human rights.
