RASC: Shah Wali, the head of the United Nations World Food Program in Afghanistan, says that about 20 million people in this country sleep hungry at night due to poverty.

In an interview with “Sky News” TV channel in London yesterday, Sunday, May 14, he said that job opportunities in this country have decreased drastically with the rule of the Taliban group.

“Every day, about 20 million people in Afghanistan do not have enough food and go to bed hungry, and four million mothers and children are at risk of malnutrition and death,” Shah Wali added.

After August 2021, Afghanistan’s economic foundation has collapsed. There has been a drought for the past three years and food prices have also increased.”

According to him, the two crises of reducing food production due to drought and not being able to buy food due to the spread of poverty and lack of jobs have simultaneously affected the people of Afghanistan.

The United Nations World Food Program says that malnutrition in 25 provinces of the country from 34 provinces is above the emergency threshold, and it is expected to intensify this trend.

It stated that about half of children under five and a quarter of pregnant and lactating women will need critical nutritional support in the next 12 months.

The World Food Program adds that it urgently needs $1.46 billion for its aid operations in Afghanistan for the next six months.
