RASC: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has announced that in the last six months, the Taliban group has physically punished at least 334 people on charges of various crimes.
According to the UNAMA report, the implementation of corporal punishment of the accused and executions by the Taliban group was carried out from August 2021 to May 2023.
In this report, examples of corporal punishment and death penalty are determined based on documented domestic and international laws.
According to the UNAMA report, the people who were subjected to corporal punishment include 274 men, 58 women and two boys who received their punishment from the Taliban group’s court and were flogged.
UNAMA’s Human Rights Directorate says that corporal punishment is a violation of the Convention against Torture and the Taliban must stop these actions.
In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban group has claimed based on their own perception of religion, this group is obliged to observe Islamic laws and such punishments have been determined in Islamic laws.
This is despite the fact that such punishments are rarely seen in other Islamic countries and Muslims attribute such behavior to the Taliban.
