Murder of Kubra Rezai Sparks Outcry Among Civil Society and Press Freedom Advocates

RASC News Agency: The Organization for the Protection of Civil Society and Journalists in Exile has issued a powerful condemnation of the horrific murder of Kubra Rezai, a young Afghanistani migrant whose dismembered body was discovered in Tehran after nearly two months of disappearance. The organization described the crime as “barbaric” and demanded the immediate arrest and full prosecution of those responsible, while also drawing urgent attention to the plight of Afghanistani refugees across the region. Rezai’s disappearance and subsequent murder have sent shockwaves through the Afghanistani diaspora, igniting widespread outrage among human rights defenders and migrant justice organizations. Her case is not merely an isolated tragedy it is the outcome of a broader and deepening humanitarian catastrophe rooted in the systematic collapse of rule of law under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, which continues to drive thousands into perilous exile.

In an official statement, the organization stressed that a significant portion of Afghanistani citizens have been forced to flee their homeland due to the oppressive, misogynistic, and violent practices of the Taliban regime. These individuals, it added, seek nothing more than the right to live in dignity, freedom, and safety rights systematically denied to them in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan and increasingly under threat in their countries of refuge. “Kubra Rezai was not just a victim of individual violence she was a casualty of a much larger crisis enabled by Taliban terror and international indifference,” the organization stated. “She escaped a regime that has declared war on women, only to be silenced again in exile.”

The organization urged the Islamic Republic of Iran to pursue a comprehensive, transparent, and impartial investigation into Rezai’s murder. It called for the Iranian judiciary to demonstrate its commitment to justice by ensuring that the perpetrators are brought swiftly to account. However, the statement did not stop at Iran. It directed sharp criticism at the international community, particularly the United Nations and global human rights bodies, for their failure to ensure the protection of Afghanistani refugees especially women who are increasingly exposed to violence, impunity, and systemic neglect. “This tragedy must awaken the conscience of the world,” the statement declared. “Kubra Rezai had no government to defend her. But she had a people and her people will not forget. Her blood is a permanent stain on the silence that enabled it.”

The organization emphasized that the Taliban’s gender apartheid, repressive governance, and criminalization of civil liberties have pushed countless Afghanistani women into the shadows stripping them of access to education, employment, safety, and basic dignity. These abuses, the statement added, have directly contributed to an exodus of refugees now vulnerable to xenophobia, exploitation, and violence abroad. In its concluding remarks, the organization called on host nations and global agencies to uphold their legal and moral obligations to protect asylum seekers. It demanded the establishment of dedicated protection mechanisms for Afghanistani refugees, the majority of whom are fleeing conditions that amount to state-sponsored persecution under the Taliban’s authoritarian rule.

“The road to justice begins with accountability,” the statement concluded. “Justice for Kubra Rezai is not just about arresting her killers. It is about dismantling the political conditions domestic and international that made her death possible.”
