RASC News Agency: Rasoul Mousavi, former Director-General for South Asia at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has characterized the recent U.S. delegation’s visit to Kabul as a pivotal moment in the evolving foreign relations of the Taliban. He further cautioned that regional intelligence and political agencies, particularly in Iran, currently find themselves in a state of “strategic complacency”. Mousavi revealed that reports suggest the U.S. delegation initially visited Kandahar before heading to Kabul, where they conducted private meetings.
In response to these developments, Mousavi remarked on social media:
“It seems that regional intelligence and political bodies, much like during the fall of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, are now in a state of strategic slumber.” At the same time, the visit of Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, along with the U.S. President’s former Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, has raised further concerns in Tehran.
This visit marked the first official U.S. diplomatic mission to Afghanistan since the American military withdrawal in mid-2021. During the trip, U.S. officials held meetings with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s Foreign Minister, in Kabul. Before this, diplomatic negotiations between U.S. representatives and Taliban officials had already taken place in Qatar and Norway.
