Sunday Times: Taliban Tortured Imprisoned British Couple

RASC News Agency: A British couple, both education activists, have reportedly been subjected to torture and mistreatment while in Taliban custody. According to a report by The Sunday Times on Sunday, March 16, the Taliban separated them and transferred them to a high-security prison following their arrest. Their eldest daughter, Sara Entwistle, revealed that her father is suffering from a severe chest and eye infection, leaving him in critical condition. She further stated that both parents have been denied access to essential medication.

She also described the harsh conditions of their detention, stating, “We have learned that male prisoners in Kabul receive three meals a day, while female detainees are given only one.” Peter Reynolds, 79, and his wife Barbie, 75, were detained two months ago in Bamiyan, where they had spent years working to educate Afghanistani women and girls. Initially, the Taliban denied any involvement in their arrest. However, Abdul Matin Qani, the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior spokesperson, later confirmed their detention. A few days after their capture, Taliban officials attempted to downplay the incident, calling it a ‘misunderstanding.’

Now, international reports confirm that the British couple has been transferred to a high-security facility, where they have endured physical abuse and inhumane treatment. In response to the Taliban’s unpredictable rule and the proliferation of terrorist groups in Afghanistan, several Western governments have issued travel advisories, strongly warning their citizens against traveling to the country.
