Taliban: A Truly Independent UN Would Grant Us Afghanistan’s Seat

RASC News Agency: The Taliban have accused the United Nations of lacking independence, asserting that if the organization were truly impartial, it would have recognized their envoy and granted them Afghanistan’s seat at the UN. Hamidullah Fitrat, the Taliban’s deputy spokesperson, stated that the group has made extensive efforts to engage with the international community, but certain nations continue to obstruct their path to formal recognition. “Some countries are deliberately preventing the Taliban from securing Afghanistan’s seat at the UN,” Fitrat claimed, arguing that political biases are influencing global decisions regarding the group’s legitimacy.

More than three years since their return to power, the Taliban remain diplomatically isolated, with the international community refusing to recognize their rule. This rejection stems from their widespread human rights violations, systemic oppression of women, failure to establish an inclusive government, and ongoing ties to extremist groups. As a result, the UN has refused to grant them Afghanistan’s official representation. The Taliban face mounting allegations of egregious human rights abuses across Afghanistan. In a significant legal move, a prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC) has formally requested arrest warrants for the Taliban’s leader and chief justice, citing crimes against humanity and gender-based persecution.

This request has received strong international backing. Nations including France, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom have publicly supported the ICC’s efforts, stating that the Taliban are institutionalizing systemic discrimination, persecution, and gender-based oppression an approach that is both indefensible and a blatant violation of international law. Despite this escalating global condemnation, the Taliban continue to deny any human rights violations, urging the United Nations to recognize their administration. However, the UN particularly its Afghanistan mission, UNAMA has consistently accused the Taliban of widespread and systematic rights abuses.
