Global Terrorism Index Ranks Afghanistan Among the Most Severely Affected Countries

RASC News Agency: The Global Terrorism Index has ranked Afghanistan as the ninth most affected country by terrorism, placing it among the nations most severely impacted by terror-related activities. In this ranking, Burkina Faso is positioned first, with Pakistan in second place. The report, published by the Global Terrorism Index, reveals that for the second consecutive year, Afghanistan did not rank among the top five countries most affected by terrorism. This represents the best ranking the country has achieved since the inception of the index. This shift is attributed to the exclusion of Taliban activities from the index following their return to power in 2021. The Taliban is recognized as a terrorist organization and has been accused of supporting numerous other militant groups.

The Global Terrorism Index report states that despite a slight reduction in fatalities, Afghanistan continues to face a persistent threat in 2024. The number of attacks, however, has increased by almost 20%, signaling a surge in terror-related incidents. The report highlights that the number of attacks rose from 73 in 2023 to 87 in 2024. It further notes: “This year, Afghanistan achieved its lowest ranking in the Global Terrorism Index since its establishment, and for the second consecutive year, it has remained outside the top five countries.” According to the report, terrorist activities in Afghanistan are predominantly concentrated in the northern regions, with Kabul and Takhar registering the highest number of attacks in 2024. Kabul in particular has experienced the highest number of fatalities, with 27 deaths resulting from 41 attacks.

Moreover, the United Nations recently reported that anti-Taliban factions carried out 91 attacks against the Taliban in the previous month. The report states that the National Resistance Front (Jabha-ye-Muqawamat-e-Milli) was responsible for 51 attacks, and the Liberation Front (Jabha-ye-Azadi) conducted 21 attacks, positioning these actions within the broader context of the ongoing struggle for Afghanistan’s liberation.
