Afghanistani Refugee from Panjshir Commits Suicide in Pakistan Amid Prolonged Immigration Delays

RASC News Agency: Sources report that an Afghanistani refugee in Islamabad has taken his own life due to prolonged delays in the processing of his Canadian immigration application. According to sources, the deceased identified as Shir, a 23-year-old man from Panjshir had been waiting in Pakistan alongside his sister for their immigration case to be approved. His family had already resettled in Canada, leaving him and his sister in legal limbo as they awaited their visas. The incident occurred on the evening of February 4, with authorities transferring his body to forensic specialists for further examination.

Shir had been residing in Pakistan for nearly two years, awaiting final approval for his resettlement application. He had already completed his medical examination, and his case was reportedly in its final stages before processing delays and Pakistani authorities’ mistreatment of Afghanistani refugees took a toll on his mental health. Another source revealed that Pakistani police had raided the guesthouse where Shir was staying just before his suicide, further exacerbating his distress.

Over the past three years, multiple cases of Afghanistani refugees taking their own lives in Pakistan have been reported. Following the Taliban’s return to power, thousands of Afghanistani citizens fled the country, while others were evacuated by foreign governments. However, Pakistan has adopted a hostile stance toward Afghanistani refugees, subjecting them to arbitrary detentions, harassment, and forced deportations back to Afghanistan.
