Religious Scholars Condemn Taliban’s Repression Following the Arrest of Three Clerics

RASC News Agency: The Taliban have reportedly detained three prominent religious scholars in Kabul this week for publicly criticizing Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada and his directives, further exposing the group’s repressive grip on dissent. The arrested clerics Abdul Qadir Qanit, Mahmood Hassan, and Abdul Aziz Shoja had openly denounced the Taliban’s leadership, accusing Mullah Hibatullah of monopolizing power in Kandahar. Their outspoken criticism was swiftly met with retaliation, as Taliban forces apprehended them and transferred them to an undisclosed location. The detentions have sparked strong condemnation from religious scholars, who argue that the Taliban have no tolerance for opposing voices and are systematically instilling fear to suppress any form of resistance.

During a press conference held in Kabul on Monday, January 27, under the theme “Peace and Coexistence Among Afghans,” several clerics called on the Taliban leadership to form an inclusive government and restore fundamental rights, particularly for women and girls. One of the scholars at the event urged. “Do not confine all power to Kandahar. Step beyond Kandahar other provinces are also part of Afghanistan.” Abdul Aziz Shoja, one of the detained scholars, emphasized the significance of education and faith, stating:

“Men and women who seek knowledge attain a high status before Allah. Those who possess faith, regardless of gender, are honored in the eyes of Allah.” Despite growing backlash, the Taliban have remained silent on these arrests. However, sources allege that the scholars were subjected to humiliation and mistreatment before being taken into custody.

Religious scholars accuse the Taliban of resorting to brute force and oppression to silence critics, stating that the group employs coercion, physical abuse, and psychological intimidation against those lacking military power much like their treatment of female protesters. Analysts argue that these arrests are yet another indication that the Taliban are determined to eradicate any form of dissent, ensuring that no voice rises against their rule. This latest crackdown follows a pattern of arbitrary detentions and brutal punishments against individuals who defy Taliban directives.
