Taliban Detain Two Former Military Officers in Balkh and Baghlan

RASC News Agency: Sources indicate that the Taliban have arrested two former Afghanistan military officers from Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, and Nahrin district in Baghlan province. The individuals, identified as Abdul Wasi Kahgdayee and Nazir Ahmad, are both from Nahrin district and were members of the Afghanistan National Army during the Republic era. According to a source, Wasi Kahgdayee served at Bagram Air Base during the Republic and, after the collapse of the government, moved to Mazar-e-Sharif, where he worked as a fruit vendor. He was detained on Sunday evening, January 26, while at work in Mazar-e-Sharif.

The source further noted that Wasi Kahgdayee is the brother of Hamza Kahgdayee, a former commander of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, who was killed in Nahrin in June of this year. The Taliban are also reported to have arrested Nazir Ahmad, Hamza’s brother-in-law, from the village of Khwaja Ahmad in Nahrin district on Saturday. Nazir Ahmad, a former officer in the Afghanistan National Army, was residing in Khwaja Ahmad village at the time of his arrest. The reasons behind the detention of these former military officers remain unclear. Despite their public declaration of a general amnesty, the Taliban continue to carry out arbitrary arrests of former military personnel.

Furthermore, the Taliban have been accused of extrajudicial killings of ex-military members. Reports suggest that, over the past two and a half years, the Taliban have detained, tortured, and killed tens of thousands of former security forces, particularly young Tajiks, across various provinces, including Panjshir, Parwan, Kapisa, Badakhshan, Baghlan, Takhar, Balkh, Herat, and other Tajik-majority regions.
