RASC News Agency: Imangali Tasmagambetov, Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), has announced that the organization’s comprehensive plan to bolster the security of the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border is scheduled to commence in 2025. This initiative incorporates a series of specialized measures designed to safeguard the southern flank of the CSTO’s jurisdiction. During a briefing held on Thursday, January 23, in Moscow to review the CSTO Secretariat and Joint Staff’s activities for 2024, Tasmagambetov highlighted the organization’s key achievements and outlined its strategic objectives for the upcoming year.
He revealed that in 2024, critical agreements regarding the modernization of CSTO forces with state-of-the-art weaponry and military technology had been evaluated and formalized. “This initiative is anchored in targeted actions to reinforce the security framework of the CSTO’s southern sector,” Tasmagambetov emphasized. The CSTO member states have repeatedly voiced grave concerns over the expanding presence of “terrorist entities” within Afghanistan, identifying them as a severe and imminent threat to regional stability. In a joint statement issued in December 2024, the foreign ministers of CSTO nations collectively expressed alarm over the proliferation of such groups within Afghanistan territory.
It is pertinent to note that the Taliban regime in Afghanistan reportedly hosts a multitude of terrorist organizations originating from various countries. These factions are alleged to receive extensive financial, logistical, political, and intelligence support from the Taliban. This precarious situation has heightened security apprehensions, particularly for Central Asian nations such as Tajikistan, which remains acutely vulnerable to the spillover effects of terrorism from Afghanistan.
