RASC News Agency: Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Envoy for Afghanistani Women, Girls, and Human Rights, has officially concluded her mission. In a farewell letter released on Sunday, January 19, Amiri wrote: “Advocating for the courageous women and men of Afghanistan who stand at the forefront of the struggle for a rights-based, inclusive Afghanistan has been an extraordinary honor.” She highlighted her unwavering commitment during her tenure, striving to defend the rights of Afghanistani women and men enduring the oppressive rule of the Taliban.
Her letter emphasized: “There remains an urgent need to hold the Taliban accountable and to amplify the voices and efforts of women leaders and human rights defenders.” Amiri further stated: “We must continue pressing the Taliban to rescind their devastating decrees that have stripped women and girls of autonomy, freedom of movement, access to education, economic opportunities, and life-saving healthcare services.” She also stressed the importance of advocating for the rights of ethnic and religious minorities, urging the Taliban to end their systematic culture of fear and oppression.
Calling for global solidarity, Amiri wrote: “The world must stand with the brave women and men of Afghanistan, whose greatest hope lies in a stable, peaceful Afghanistan that coexists harmoniously with its neighbors. This is not only a moral obligation but a strategic necessity for the region and the world.” She concluded her letter with a powerful statement: “I did my best to serve as a voice for Afghanistani women.” Rina Amiri was appointed as the U.S. Special Envoy for Afghanistani Women, Girls, and Human Rights in late 2021.
With the conclusion of her mission, it remains unclear whether someone will succeed her or if the position will be dissolved entirely. Recently, the U.S. State Department also eliminated the position of Special Representative for Afghanistan.
