RASC News Agency: According to reports from American media, Tim Burchett, a U.S. Congressman, has unveiled a proposed law titled the “No Taxpayer Funding for Terrorists Act.” The legislation seeks to block any financial support to the Taliban via foreign aid or programs funded by U.S. taxpayers.
The proposed bill comprises three primary pillars:
Policy Development and Enforcement: The U.S. Department of State must formulate and implement policies to ensure that no foreign aid is channeled to the Taliban.
Comprehensive Reporting on Cash Assistance: A detailed report is required for all cash assistance programs in Afghanistan, including specific measures to prevent the Taliban from accessing these fundsTransparency on Afghanistan’s Trust Fund and Central Bank: The U.S. government must produce an in-depth report on the current status of Afghanistan’s trust fund and its central bank.
Commenting on the bill, Congressman Burchett stated on X (formerly Twitter): “It’s alarming that such legislation even needs to be introduced in the first place.” This legislative move reflects heightened concerns over the Taliban’s exploitation of foreign financial aid and international assistance. The bill is designed to enhance financial transparency and ensure that U.S. taxpayer dollars do not bolster the Taliban’s grip on power.
It is noteworthy that, since the Taliban’s return to power, the United States has provided millions of dollars in monthly financial assistance to Afghanistan, ostensibly to prevent the country’s economic collapse under Taliban rule. However, critics argue that these funds indirectly strengthened the group’s control.
