RASC News Agency: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has called on the Taliban to rescind their “Amr bil Maroof” (Vice and Virtue) law and revoke the ban preventing women from accessing healthcare institutions. In a statement issued on Saturday, December 28, the Council urged the Taliban to uphold women’s rights in their entirety. The UNSC’s statement further emphasized the necessity for the Taliban to refrain from providing sanctuary to terrorist groups within Afghanistan and to actively combat their activities. These resolutions were adopted during a meeting on Afghanistan held by the Council on December 12. The statement also expressed deep concern over Afghanistan’s worsening economic crisis and the hurdles impeding humanitarian aid, demanding urgent action to eliminate these obstacles.
Moreover, the Council warned that Afghanistan’s rampant narcotics cultivation is financing terrorist organizations that pose significant threats to regional and global security. It urged immediate and decisive measures to curtail drug production and trafficking. The UNSC reiterated the United Nations’ critical role in ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan and advocated for engaging the Taliban through the Doha process to address these challenges. Despite these calls, the Taliban have persistently dismissed international concerns, labeling them as unfounded while rigidly adhering to their oppressive and regressive policies. Over the past three years, the United Nations has limited its response to issuing statements and denouncing the Taliban’s barrage of restrictive decrees without implementing any substantive countermeasures.
Critics argue that the United Nations has increasingly lost its authority amid escalating global crises, and the Taliban, emboldened by the international community’s inaction, continue to disregard the UNSC’s appeals with impunity.
