Afghanistan Under Taliban Rule: The Return to a Global Terrorism Epicenter and a Threat to International Security

RASC News Agency: In a report from SCMP, Over three years after the U.S. military withdrawal and the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, global concerns have intensified regarding the country’s resurgence as a breeding ground for international terrorism. The heightened activities of terrorist groups such as ISIS-Khorasan and Al-Qaeda, along with record-breaking narcotics production and the proliferation of radical ideologies, have severe ramifications for regional and global security. Reports consistently reveal that ISIS-Khorasan has evolved into a major external terrorist threat to Europe. The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism has warned that the group is leveraging Afghanistan’s ongoing instability to establish a stronghold capable of orchestrating attacks not only in neighboring states but also in more distant regions.

Rustam Emomali, the Speaker of Tajikistan’s National Assembly, underscored Afghanistan’s escalating security threats during a session of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Parliamentary Assembly. He highlighted the surge in drug production and the spread of religious extremism as critical contributors to regional instability, raising alarm among Central and South Asian nations. During the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, multiple countries stressed the urgent need for an inclusive government in Afghanistan. Delegates cautioned that allowing the nation to devolve into a terrorism epicenter could lead to catastrophic consequences for the global community.

Experts assert that a unified international response is essential to counter terrorism and the instability it engenders. Key strategies include applying diplomatic and economic pressure on the Taliban to form an inclusive government, disrupting the production and trade of narcotics, and curtailing the influence of terrorist organizations. These measures, they argue, are pivotal to stabilizing Afghanistan and safeguarding regional peace. Afghanistan today is not merely mired in a domestic crisis it has emerged as a formidable international challenge, threatening global peace and stability at an unprecedented scale.
