Organization of Islamic Cooperation Condemns Taliban’s Ban on Girls’ Education as a Violation of Its Principles

RASC News Agency: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned the Taliban’s decision to ban girls from studying in medical institutes, describing it as a flagrant violation of the organization’s principles and resolutions. In an official statement, the OIC expressed grave concern over the Taliban’s directive, emphasizing that Afghanistani women are facing serious infringements on their fundamental right to education. The statement declared the Taliban’s decree entirely inconsistent with the values and resolutions upheld by the OIC.

The statement, issued on Thursday, December 5, read: “In recent days, Afghanistani women have endured significant violations of their fundamental right to education. Reports from Kabul indicate that a decree has been enacted, prohibiting women from pursuing education in nursing and midwifery programs.” The OIC unequivocally rejected the Taliban’s directive as unacceptable and reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for women’s education in Afghanistan. Earlier, the Taliban’s supreme leader ordered the closure of all higher and semi-higher medical educational institutions to women. In the wake of this decree, the Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health instructed medical institutes to deny female students access to education.

The OIC characterized the Taliban’s decision as “deeply alarming,” “profoundly disappointing,” and a direct violation of the organization’s principles and commitments. The organization further asserted that the Taliban’s actions are fundamentally unjust and disproportionately harm Afghanistani women. It also warned that this policy would exacerbate the challenges facing Afghanistan’s already fragile healthcare system. The OIC expressed hope that through constructive dialogue and engagement with the Taliban, meaningful steps could be taken to reverse the ban on girls’ education. The organization stressed the importance of safeguarding women’s rights in alignment with Islamic values and the resolutions of the OIC.

The Taliban’s decision has drawn widespread condemnation from global organizations, which have described it as regressive and deeply troubling for Afghanistani society.
