Human Rights Activists to Trump: Revoke the Doha Agreement with the Taliban

RASC News Agency: A group of human rights activists and Afghanistani women’s protest movements have sent an open letter to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, urging the immediate annulment of the Doha Agreement between the United States and the Taliban. In the letter, published on Saturday, November 23, the activists argued that the peace agreement has had disastrous consequences for the people of Afghanistan.

The letter outlines that the agreement has facilitated the systematic oppression of women and girls, as well as religious minorities by the Taliban. It also highlights targeted assassinations, the escalating refugee crisis and forced displacement, the weakening of media freedoms and the persecution of journalists, alongside the surge in narcotics production and trafficking as some of the major domestic repercussions of the agreement. Furthermore, the activists pointed to the international consequences of the Doha Agreement, including the strengthening of global terrorism, intensified regional instability, the looming threat of mass migration, the establishment of a perilous governance model, and the rise of organized crime.

The letter addressed to Trump states: “Your decision to support the people of Afghanistan, particularly the women and girls suffering under Taliban oppression, could alter the nation’s fate. We call on you to leverage your influence and power to bring justice, freedom, and peace to Afghanistan.” The activists’ demands to the U.S. President-elect include the prosecution of Taliban leaders, efforts to establish a democratically elected government in Afghanistan, the fortification of civil society and media institutions, and intensified diplomatic pressure on the Taliban to uphold human rights.
