Escalating Insecurity in Badakhshan: Taliban Announces New Mobile Patrol Unit

RASC News Agency: Amid a surge in insecurity across Badakhshan, Taliban authorities have announced the formation of a mobile patrol unit to operate in Faizabad city and several districts within the province. Ehsanullah Kamgar, spokesperson for the Taliban’s security command in Badakhshan, stated on Sunday, November 3, that this unit was established in response to escalating violence and armed robberies, and will operate in the provincial capital and multiple districts.

Kamgar explained that over 100 Taliban fighters, equipped with motorcycles and military gear, will be deployed across key areas in Faizabad to reinforce security and prevent criminal activity. The Taliban claims that this initiative aims to reduce crime and bolster stability within Badakhshan. In addition to Faizabad, these Taliban patrols will cover the districts of Yaftal, Baharak, and Kishm. This announcement comes as the National Resistance Front and the Freedom Front occasionally launch attacks against Taliban positions in the region.

Many Badakhshan residents, like others across Afghanistan, have voiced grave concerns regarding their future under Taliban rule. Locals report that since the Taliban’s return to power, the province’s educated professionals have either fled the country or remain unemployed, uncertain of their future. In their place, individuals with little formal education or experience, including Taliban fighters and those who have received only months of instruction in Pakistan-based madrassas, have assumed local roles.

Residents lament that they lack mental, physical, occupational, and legal security, with accounts of Taliban members detaining and disappearing individuals at will. The situation has left the people of Badakhshan feeling abandoned and vulnerable under Taliban governance.
