Taliban Re-arrest Tajik Commander in Takhar

RASC News Agency: Local sources from Takhar report that the Taliban have once again detained Ghulam Hussain Mubariz, a Tajik-origin commander within their ranks. Known as “Ghulam Hussain Jandi,” Mubariz, a prominent figure among Tajik Taliban forces, was arrested by members of the Omari Corps, stationed in Kunduz. According to sources, on the night of Tuesday October 8th, Taliban forces from the Omari Corps raided Mubariz’s residence in the Chah Ab district of Takhar. During the raid, they apprehended both Mubariz and his nephew.

This marks the second time the Taliban have detained Mubariz. He was first arrested in July this year by the Omari Corps and transferred to Kunduz. At that time, he was released on the condition that he refrain from returning to his hometown. However, Mubariz’s secret return seven days ago resulted in his re-arrest. In July, the Taliban accused Mubariz of murder, extortion, and defying orders from local Taliban officials in Takhar. As part of their crackdown, the Taliban disarmed Mubariz’s loyal forces and detained several of his associates.

So far, Taliban officials in Takhar have not commented on this latest arrest. Since their return to power in Afghanistan, the Taliban have repeatedly targeted and imprisoned non-Pashtun members and commanders within their ranks, frequently disarming or sidelining them. The Taliban, widely seen as an ethnic and extremist group, have yet to receive formal recognition from any nation. Moreover, non-Pashtun ethnic groups remain glaringly absent from their government’s structure.
