Human Rights Activists Urge UN Human Rights Council to Prioritize Javed Kohistani’s Arrest

RASC News Agency: In response to the arrest of political analyst Javed Kohistani by the Taliban, the Union of Human Rights Activists has urged the United Nations Human Rights Council to treat this issue as a priority. The union’s statement emphasized that Kohistani’s detention by the Taliban was carried out “illegally,” constituting a clear breach of international human rights law.

The statement further revealed that Mr. Kohistani, who suffers from a heart condition, had been receiving treatment at home prior to his arrest. The union cautioned that the denial of adequate medical care in Taliban custody violates his “right to medical treatment.” Moreover, it asserted that the Taliban have violated Kohistani’s rights to personal liberty and security, legal representation, and the right to a fair trial violations that affect both him and many other detainees.

Javid Kohistani, a well-known political analyst, was apprehended by Taliban intelligence forces on Thursday, September 26, in the Khair Khana district of Kabul. No official reason for his arrest has been provided, and the Taliban have remained silent on the matter.

The Taliban, infamous as one of the most brutal and oppressive regimes in Afghanistan, routinely detain individuals under various charges without due process. Detainees are often transferred to prison without a proper trial or the chance to defend themselves. Once imprisoned, they are isolated, cut off from all communication, and their well-being remains unknown to the outside world.
