European Parliament President: The Struggle of Afghanistani Women Will Not Be Ignored

RASC News Agency: International media reports indicate that Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, reaffirmed her commitment to supporting Afghanistani women’s efforts to secure their rights during a session on Tuesday. Addressing the Afghanistani women present, Metsola stated, “Your struggle will not be ignored.”

On Tuesday, September 17, the European Parliament hosted several Afghanistani women activists. Among the attendees were Shukria Barakzai, Parwana Ibrahimkhil Najrabi, Parasto Yari, Farah Alqa Onchizada, Farzana Kochi, and Tahmineh Salek. However, some activists have raised concerns that certain attendees might be advocating for the Taliban due to ethnic and political affiliations. For over three years, the Taliban have imposed severe restrictions on Afghanistani women and girls in both private and public spheres.

The Taliban have prohibited girls above the sixth grade from attending school and barred female students from universities. Recently, the group enacted a new law titled “Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice,” which further targets women. This legislation prohibits women from speaking to non-mahram men and categorizes their voices, even when reciting the Quran, as “awra” (a term referring to modesty).

Human Rights Watch has previously reported that the issue of women’s education seems to be of minimal concern to the international community. It is observed that global powers and their intelligence agencies in Afghanistan and the region are primarily focused on their own security objectives, with the Taliban serving as the most accessible and cost-effective soldiers for their strategic interests.
