RASC News Agency: Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, has called for the prosecution of those responsible for Monday’s attack in Kabul. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Bennett described the attack as “shocking” and emphasized that “nothing can justify such violence.” He urged that “those responsible must be brought to justice after a thorough investigation and a fair trial.”
The attack took place on Monday at Qala-e-Bakhtiar in Kabul’s 6th security district, targeting the main gate of the Attorney General’s Office. While the Taliban announced that six people were killed and 13 injured, other sources suggest the death toll may be higher.
The Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, alleging that over 45 people, including members of the Taliban, were killed or wounded. According to the statement, the suicide bomber waited for the staff to exit through the main gate before detonating his explosive vest. Reports indicate that all those killed were Tajiks.
Many citizens believe that ISIS in Afghanistan is a coded operation by intelligence agencies and that the Taliban use suicide attacks to purge government offices of non-Pashtuns and opponents of the Taliban. This tactic, they say, was also employed by the governments of Ashraf Ghani and Hamid Karzai, whose intelligence agencies eliminated political and ethnic opponents and attributed the acts to the Taliban or ISIS. It appears that the Taliban have now adopted this strategy as well.
