Spain Seeks to Prosecute Taliban Leaders in The Hague

RASC News Agency: The Spanish government has announced its intention to bring Taliban officials to trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague for human rights violations. A Spanish diplomat reported on Tuesday, September 3rd, that an organization named “MásDemocracia” is actively gathering signatures to push for the prosecution of Taliban leaders.

This organization has urged the ICC to classify the Taliban’s “suppression” of women and girls as “crimes against humanity.” Over the past three years, the Taliban have been accused by international organizations and several countries of gross human rights violations, particularly against women and girls.

This demand follows a report from Human Rights Watch last year, which called for the ICC to investigate gender-based violence perpetrated by the Taliban as crimes against humanity. At that time, the organization insisted that Taliban officials must put an end to all forms of oppression and discrimination that strip women and girls of their fundamental rights.

It is worth noting that in October 2022, the ICC authorized its prosecutor to examine the human rights situation in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. During their three years in power, the Taliban have brutally suppressed, tortured, and killed citizens, particularly women and ethnic minorities. To date, the Taliban have ignored the demands of countries, organizations, and international bodies.
