RASC News Agency: The office of the Taliban governor in Kandahar announced yesterday that Rosa Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, had traveled to Kandahar. According to the statement, Otunbayeva met with the Taliban’s deputy governor during her visit.
The visit, as detailed in the announcement, was aimed at discussing alternative crop cultivation to replace opium poppy farming. Otunbayeva also expressed the United Nations’ readiness to assist farmers in Kandahar with the transition to alternative crops. In her meeting with Mohammad Sadiq Inqilabi, the Taliban’s deputy governor in Kandahar, Otunbayeva mentioned that last year, the United Nations provided humanitarian aid to 26 million people in Afghanistan through various agencies.
The Taliban deputy governor also urged the United Nations to cooperate in treating addiction and promoting alternative crops to poppy cultivation. Inqilabi further claimed that Afghanistan enjoys “complete security” and requested that Otunbayeva encourage international investors to invest in the country.
Despite its presence in Afghanistan, the UNAMA office holds little significance, akin to the role of a district official, given that it once supported the oppressive policies of the Ghani administration against the rightful will and just opinions of the people. Since the Taliban’s return, the office’s primary function has been to issue statements and provide justifications for the Taliban regime’s oppressive measures. The UNAMA chief’s visit to Kandahar, the center of the Taliban regime, comes at a time when the latest decree from this group has turned Afghanistan into a living hell for its citizens. Yet, instead of addressing these draconian laws and orders, she chose to discuss opium poppy cultivation with the deputy governor of Kandahar, no less!
