RASC News Agency: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced a donation of $2.2 million from Canada to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund. According to a statement released on social media platform X on Wednesday, August 7, this amount is equivalent to CAD 3 million.
OCHA indicated that Canada’s total contributions to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund have reached CAD 15.8 million since 2019. This aid comes at a time when the Taliban’s repressive policies regarding women’s and girls’ rights and freedoms have obstructed the delivery of aid and services in Afghanistan.
The U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) previously reported that Washington has provided $21 billion in assistance to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan over the past three years. Following the Taliban’s takeover, poverty and unemployment among Afghanistani citizens have surged, leading to an increased demand for humanitarian aid.
The Taliban’s prohibition of women working in government institutions has further undermined the economy of households led by women. Additionally, during the three years of Taliban rule, numerous humanitarian organizations have been compelled to suspend their operations due to the group’s restrictions on their staff.
