RASC News Agency: Sources within the Taliban report the dismissal of Mawlawi Abdul Karim Mahboob, the head of the Taliban’s intelligence for Herat. According to these sources, on Tuesday, July 23rd, following the arrest of several Taliban intelligence members in Herat on charges of affiliation with the Daesh group, the head of Taliban intelligence for Herat has been removed from his position.
Previously, several intelligence members in the province were arrested on similar charges of having connections with Daesh. The sources emphasize that over the past month, at least 20 individuals from the Herat intelligence department have been arrested by the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence on charges of affiliation with Daesh.
The arrested individuals are accused of joining Daesh and acting as spies for the group within the Taliban ranks. The sources further indicate that the successive arrests and the infiltration of Daesh into the Taliban’s intelligence in Herat have led to the dismissal and house arrest of Mawlawi Mahboob. The Taliban have placed the Herat intelligence chief under house arrest.
Simultaneously, the Taliban leader has reshuffled several governors and department heads, transferring them from one location to another. The Taliban in Herat have yet to comment on the house arrest of the province’s intelligence chief. This situation arises amidst previous reports of Daesh infiltration within Taliban departments in Herat, particularly in their intelligence sector.
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, Daesh has intensified its conflict with the group and has begun recruiting members. Daesh also recruits from within the Taliban, and many quickly join the ranks of Daesh.
