RASC News Agency: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced that the death toll from the recent floods and storms in several provinces of Afghanistan has reached 71. According to the IOM, the events on the 16th and 17th of July resulted in the destruction of over 900 homes. The organization reported that severe floods have affected the provinces of Nangarhar, Badakhshan, Kunar, Laghman, and Baghlan.
On Tuesday, the IOM stated on its social media account that it has provided emergency aid to 130 families and health services to 257 individuals. In addition to the destruction of homes, a significant number of livestock have perished in the recent floods. The increase in the death toll comes as the humanitarian aid coordinator in Afghanistan reported that severe storms have impacted 29 districts in the eastern and northeastern provinces of Afghanistan.
OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) noted that all families in the flood and storm-affected districts require food, shelter, health services, and drinking water. The organization mentioned that emergency aid has reached these areas. However, numerous reports from residents claim that aid provided by relief organizations is often misappropriated by the Taliban, who allegedly distribute the aid among their families instead of delivering it to those in need.
Residents have accused the Taliban of stealing and misusing the aid. Previously, the Taliban were also reported to have seized relief supplies meant for flood victims. Additionally, several civil society activists in Nangarhar have stated that they formed a joint committee to collect aid for flood victims, but the Taliban obstructed their efforts.
The Taliban have previously halted individuals from collecting aid for flood victims.
