Bruno Kahl Admits Misjudgment on Kabul’s Fall

RASC News Agency: Nearly three years after the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan, Bruno Kahl, head of Germany’s Foreign Intelligence Service, acknowledged his miscalculation regarding the rapid fall of Kabul. According to FazNet, Kahl faced the Bundestag’s inquiry committee over his “incorrect” assessment of the Taliban’s swift advance. He had previously reported based on his judgment, which underestimated the rapid collapse of Kabul in mid-August 2021.

Kahl explained to the committee that, like other intelligence services, he expected Afghan security forces to resist longer. He had not foreseen Kabul’s simultaneous fall with the withdrawal of foreign troops, which he had shared in his assessments.

Despite warning Germany’s Foreign Ministry about the potential swift capture of provincial capitals and the American withdrawal, Kahl’s evaluations proved “incorrect.” His statements come amid ongoing criticism for his flawed predictions over the past three years.
